Washing knitwear without shrinking it
Wool blends and waffle knits prefer a cool hand wash or a gentle machine cycle at 30°C, turned inside out and placed in a mesh bag. Use a mild detergent — never fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the natural breathability of wool and cotton. Skip the dryer entirely: heat is what shrinks and distorts knitwear. Reshape the garment while damp and let gravity do the work.
Drying and storing sweaters the right way
Always dry knits flat on a towel, smoothing the sleeves and body back into shape. Hanging a wet or even a dry sweater stretches the shoulders over time, so fold pullovers and store them in a drawer or on a shelf. For long-term storage, keep wool pieces in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture. A cedar block in the drawer discourages moths without perfuming the fabric.
Keeping fleece soft and pilling at bay
Fleece hoodies and pullovers stay soft longest when washed inside out with similar-weight items and zippers closed. Pilling is natural short-fiber behavior, not a defect — a cheap fabric shaver or sweater comb removes it in a minute and restores the finish. Avoid washing fleece with towels or rough denim, which abrasively rub the pile flat.
Outerwear, trousers, and quick refreshes
Quilted and down-filled jackets rarely need full washes; spot-clean with a damp cloth and air them out after wet weather. Cotton-linen trousers machine wash warm and press lightly on medium heat. Between wears, hanging garments in a steamy bathroom releases wrinkles and odors — a ten-minute refresh that adds weeks between washes.
